“Barry McGee was born in 1966 in California, where he continues to live and work. In 1991 he received a BFA in painting and printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute. His drawings, paintings, and mixed-media installations take their inspiration from contemporary urban culture, incorporating elements such as empty liquor bottles and spray-paint cans, tagged signs, wrenches, and scrap wood or metal.” (PBS)

“In 1968 the first poster museum in the world was opened in Warsaw. Two years earlier, Poland had held the First International Poster Biennial, which for many years was the most prestigious event of its kind. The proximity of those two events was no coincidence. At that time, Poland was known for being the centre of “wall and board” art. Its distinct character and artistic value meant that the world soon began to speak of the Polish poster school.
The school emerged in the late 1950s, when, after years of Social Realism being all-pervasive in art, Polish artistic life suddenly became much more exciting. Although success is usually dependent on many factors, we can safely say that the Polish poster school has one person to thank – the painter, drawer and graphic artist, Henryk Tomaszewski. He quickly gained the support of young and extremely talented artists who for years dedicated themselves to poster art. The most important artists of the Polish poster school were Jozef Mroszczak, Wojciech Zamecznik, Jan Mlodozeniec, Waldemar Swierzy, Jan Lenica and Franciszek Starowieyski.” (Polishposter.com)

“The art of Mieczyslaw Wasilewski focuses on the sign. The vast majority of his works are spare, black-and-white drawings that accurately convey often complicated and difficult ideas. Mieczyslaw Wasilewski (born 1942) studied graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, graduating with a diploma from the poster design studio of professor Henryk Tomaszewski in 1966. He has been a professor at his alma mater since 1971. Wasilewski has won numerous awards and distinctions in the field of poster design, including prizes at the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw (Gold Medal – 1976, Silver Medal – 1994) and the International Triennial of Stage Posters in Sophia (Silver Medal – 1995).” (culture.pl)
Jason de Caires creates underwater sculptures. Instead of trying to create unchanging and lasting works, he encourages the organic growth of coral and other organisms across his creations. He’s working on a new project in Mexico at the moment, but we caught him on dry land for a few questions.
